How To Maintain Your HVAC System This Winter

January 27, 2021 By TFF HVAC

air conditioner maintenance

Preparing for the winter is something that all households should do. One of the main things that families should get ready is their HVAC system.

Today, we are going to go over steps for maintaining your HVAC system this winter. TFF HVAC wants to share this info with you so you can have the best heating and cooling systems possible.

preparing HVAC System

Shut Down Your AC

Making sure that your AC is off, and won’t turn on if an unseasonably warm day occurs is an important step. Taking the time to properly shut down your AC will help your HVAC system last longer.

First, go find the switch to shut off the AC. For many systems, this is outside. This can keep it from randomly turning on in the winter, and keep you safe from electrocution while you prepare your system for winter.

Then, take time to clean your outdoor unit thoroughly. Throughout the summer debris and dirt can end up all over your unit, so it is important to give it a good cleaning before the winter hits.

After you clean your unit you should clean up around your unit. Sweeping and trimming any foliage that may interfere with it.

Once you have washed and dried your unit on the outside, you can examine the inside of the unit. Check for any rust, cracks, or leaks. If you see any problems then make sure you fix them right away.

To keep your AC safe and secure, you should add a cover to protect it through the winter. You can use a structural cover, an AC cover, or plywood sheeting.

When you take the time to do all of this you are helping to prepare your AC for the winter and helping keep its longevity.

Check Carbon Dioxide And Smoke Alarms

The hope is always that your HVAC system will work properly, and that you and your family will be safe. However, many house fires and carbon dioxide poisoning each year are caused by faulty HVAC systems. And the results are worsened by alarms that do not work.

Checking your alarms is easy and quick. It is important to take the time to check them often to ensure that they work well.

One of your annual check-ins should be in the fall. It is a good idea to check your smoke alarm and carbon monoxide alarm each year before turning on your heating. This can keep you and your family safe and secure all winter long.

Have Your Heating System Inspected

To ensure that your system runs efficiently and safely you must have your heating system inspected before winter. Just as you would have your air conditioner maintenance near summer.

The benefits of maintenance include, but are not limited to:

  • Better comfort in your home – When your HVAC system runs efficiently, your home stays at a more even temperature.
  • Decreased heating costs – Well maintained HVAC systems simply perform better, and they save you from dealing with spikes in your utility bills
  • Longer lifespan – When you HVAC system is inspected routinely you’ll have less breakdowns over the years, and a longer lifespan on  your  heating and cooling systems

You can’t beat those kinds of benefits from having a short visit from your local HVAC pro. Make sure you get your heating system inspected to prepare for this winter.

TFF HVAC offers heating system inspections that are quality and cost-conscious. We will work hard to ensure that you and your family stay warm and safe this winter.
